Sam had his 18 month check-up (6 weeks late!). He weighs in at 26.4 lbs and measures ~32 inches.
Sam has settled into our normal routine pretty well. He no longer cries at day care drop off and seems very happy to be with his "friends" and teachers. (I think it helps that they have a bowl of cheerios waiting for him when we say goodbye in the morning.) He continues to eat well, sleep through most nights (with the exception of the recent all-nighter) and willingly joins us as we schlepp him around Brooklyn and beyond.
He does have the persistent daycare cough/cold that can make him irritable and cranky, but he's a champ considering that he's basically been sick since September!
Words are coming pretty fast and furious these days, although I think the general population wouldn't really understand what he's saying. The most recent and frequent words include: "mess" (as in, please come wipe up this food I just spilled), "brush" (as in, teeth), "this", "milk", "bippo" (aka "hippo") and "Melmo" (aka "Elmo").
Throwing is still Sam's preferred method of expressing anger, frustration or disappointment. Sometimes, he'll even seek out an item that he can throw if he doesn't have one already in his hand. His small motor skills are really good and I am shocked by how far he can throw things.
Listening to books is a favorite past-time. As soon as he wakes in the morning or from a nap, before he goes to bed at night and many times throughout the day, Sam will pick up a pile of books, bring them over, plunk down in your lap, and say, "books!". There are some books that we've read so many times, he knows when to say certain words on specific pages---a well placed, "Uh oh" during, "Sheep in a Jeep", or "bubbles" during, "Where is Baby's Belly Button?".
Everything big sis Rosie does is the best and there is a lot of Sam following her around, yelling, "Roro!". For the most part, Rosie is pretty game to be with her little brother, but there is also a fair bit of her being annoyed at Sam's existence. She has taken to identifying things as, "special", which means they are off-limits to Sam. "Special" items have included her dolls/stuffed animals, clothing, toys and any other random item that she deems important in that moment.
It feels like Sam is becoming less and less like a baby with each passing day. While it's hard to believe it wasn't so long ago that he looked like this, I am looking forward to him continuing to find his voice (and maybe even start pushing back with his self-assured big sis!).
